Weird Romance: Review by Andrew Pinard

Posted: March 19, 2013 by jamiefeinberg in Uncategorized

Wow, we are honored to have such a lovely review of this past Sunday’s production of Weird Romance. Here’s the link to the full review, and some highlights are below. The overwhelming theme? Do not miss the show. Plenty of tickets are still available to purchase here.

“Being first often requires one of the following qualities: extreme courage, excessive naiveté or deep passion. In producing the New Hampshire premiere of Weird Romance at the Derry Opera House, Not Your Mom’s Musical Theatre displays at least two of these characteristics (hint: ignore the middle one)….. Two performances stood out to me. Marc Murai’s Kevin Drayton was appropriately intense/fragile and his interaction with the hologram Nola in “You Remember” was thoroughly hypnotic. He completely lost himself in the role; the emotional roller coaster ride his character took was reflected through his eyes. I was moved to tears by his expression of loss. The highlight of the performance for me by far was Jocelyn Duford’s Nola. Her transformation from young girl to elderly woman was subtle, nuanced and totally convincing. When she sang however, she just gutted me. I expected to cry during the performance at least twice (I always do when I listen to the soundtrack), but I was totally unprepared for the wracking sobs she elicited from me…”  – Andrew PinardImage

Hope you can join us Friday for the VIP show or Saturday or Sunday for our final two performances!

Thanks for spreading the word and helping us bring some magic and fun to NH!

Hi all,

Due to the weather, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the show until Friday at 8 p.m. There will be plenty of tickets available at the door. The cast is phenomenal so we really hope you can join us then. It runs under 2 hours with intermission.

Thanks and have a great and safe snowy day!

Hi all,

If the weather gods permit, we’re on for Sunday’s show at 4 p.m. If we do have to cancel or postpone the show until the evening,  you’ll see it here. In the meantime, here is what the town of Derry was able to suggest in terms of parking on Sunday in the snow.

“Ron Robinson (Facilities Division) says that the Opera House
plaza and on-site sidewalks, and the main sidewalk on
Broadway right in front of the building will be cleared by
his crew before 4 pm, assuming the storm stops substantially
earlier than that.

The streets will be cleared.  He can’t comment on the snow
banks, on-street parking spaces or sidewalks throughout the
rest of the downtown.  That’s up to the Highway Division.
Ron recommends parking in the Abbot Court public parking
lot, behind some buildings on the opposite side of Broadway.
 It’s a short walk.”

Please use your judgement and stay safe, regardless. While the building is handicapped accessible, if the weather is awful, don’t test the limits of your abilities in the snow please!

Reserve your seats (yes, we’re doing reserved seating, not general admission) by purchasing your tickets on our Coming Attractions page.

Happy Friday!

Two quick updates in the world of NYMMT –

1. Auditions for 2013′ concert series, entitled Something Wonderful I Missed, will be January 28th. Come be a part of the innovative series that combines musical theater pieces from a given year with the often hilarious stories behind the shows!

2. Weird Romance has been cast, and it’s shaping up to be a phenomenal pair of shows! View the cast list here.

NYMMT is thrilled to kick off a season of sci-fi and fantasy with Weird Romance, the off-Broadway musical by Alan Menken and award-winning sci-fi writers. Some have compared it to the Twilight Zone, but ultimately it is two unexpected love stories, “speculative fiction” that imagines what could be in the not so distant future.

Here’s what our friends and followers are saying about this show:

“Love this show… Intelligent stories, great music… I am so glad someone is doing this locally!”

“This show has a very fun score – love the CD!!”
